Memo24 versus other telephone reminder services

This page is a more detailed version of a blog post that appeared on Nov 9th, 2015. We have conducted a thorough analysis of all the telephone call (medication) reminder services that we have found. We have selected only those reminder services that have at least telephone call reminders, also called voice reminders, or simply call reminders. Other types of reminders, but which we have not considered, include email and SMS reminders.

We believe that telephone call reminders are the most effective types of reminders for the elderly for 2 basic reasons: The main problem with SMS and email based reminders, apart from the fact that they are not necessarily accessible to the elderly, is that they are most often not read on time. This is of course not acceptable with a wide range of medications where not only the right pill must be taken but also at the right time.
Also, we have not looked at services that only focus on the B2B (business to business) market and on bulk reminders as these do not provide a personalized experience and are not accessible by individuals.

The comparison was done based on 9 criteria:
  1. Web-based dashboard: This basically indicates that one can simply add and manage his/her reminders using an online dashboard and that the reminder starts executing right after it has been added.
  2. Flexible scheduling: By this we mean the possibility to set up the schedule of a reminder by indicating the time, but also the repetition type (once/one-time, daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly).
  3. Text message languages: There is typically 2 ways to set up a message, either by typing it or by recording it. This 3rd criterion refers to the number of languages in which a user can type his/her message. Most services support only the English language, with the exception of ReminderCall and OnTimeRX which also support Spanish for example. Once a message is typed it is converted into speech (i.e. a sound file) using Text-To-Speech technology.
  4. Self-recorded message: This refers to the possibility for the user to record his/her message in his/her own voice instead of typing it. The voice of a recorded message will sound familiar to the person receiving the call, which in turn can be a much more effective way of playing the reminder message.
  5. Alert to caregiver: This is a feature in which the service sends an immediate alert (typically as an email, SMS, or even a call) to the caregiver in case the call reminder was not picked up or confirmed. We believe this feature is very important (check out this post); unfortunately from all the services only Memo24 and CareCalls provide it.
  6. Live status tracking: This is the capability for the service to show online and in real-time the status of the call reminder executions (e.g. picked up or not, upcoming execution, etc.).
  7. Coverage: This criterion simply means where calls can be made. Most services are limited to calling in the US/Canada, with the exception of Wakeme where one can also call in Australia and New Zealand, and CareCalls where calls are limited to the UK.
  8. Free trial: I think we all agree that it is good to try a service before buying :-).
  9. Price: The table shows the monthly service price for executing 1 reminder per day (i.e. a total of 30 reminders for the month). All prices have been converted into US dollars using today's (Nov 9th, 2015) official currency conversion rates.
